Kiwi Encounter – Rainbow Springs
Kiwi Encounter is a working hatchery and nursery. Kiwi are hatched and nutured at Rainbow Springs and, when mature enough, they are released back into the wild to the areas they came from. During your Kiwi Encounter tour you’ll learn much about the kiwi, its unique and endearing characteristics, its origins, its habitat and how it lives.
Reservations are essential – guided tours depart every hour from Rainbow Springs.
Hot Water Beach
For a magical day out, visit Hot Water Beach where hot bathing can be experienced on the water’s edge or water ski in a very special area. Access is by boat only. For persons without a boat, arrangements can be made with Lake Tarawera Water Taxi and they can even arrange transport to the spectacular Tarawera Falls.
This 5.5km return walk starts at Acacia Road and follows the lake edge to the Okareka Outlet. The walk features farmland, beach, lake and wetland scenery, expansive views and wildlife. The 500m boardwalk provides assisted wheelchair access to the wetland area.
Located on Millar Road, Lake Okareka, Boyes Beach is particularly popular during the summer months for activities such as swimming and picnicking. This is another great spot for water skiing during the day and trout fishing in the early morning or at the change of light at the end of the day.
Okareka Estate Adventures - All day Tours
Okareka Estate Adventures provide the ultimate Full Day Tour for all adventure seeks. There Horse Trekking tour takes you into the heart of native New Zealandbush and up over farmlan. You'll then Kayak over nearby Lake Okareka, lunch on the shore and then Boat over the beautiful Lake Tarawera towards the mountain to soak in the Thermal Hot Pool at Hot Water beach. There tours are 'small groups' with upto 8 people. Complimentary pick up is available from the Holiday Park office. Bookings are essential and can be made through Blue Lake TOP 10 Reception.
Te Urewera Treks
For a great day out, spend the day in the Whirinaki Forest - approx 60 minutes south of Rotorua. Joe and his team of guides can provide you with a memorable day out in the remote indigenouse rainforests of Te Urewera and Whirinaki. The area is rich in native birdlife and the region's Maori culture is alive and thriving. All treks include lunch and snacks, pick up and drop off in Rotorua with time spent at the end of the day relaxing in a natural hot pool. The tour comes well reccommended as staff from Blue Lake TOP 10 Holiday Park have completed the Whirinaki Loop Track and were impressed with the knowledge that was passed on from our guides.
